The Isis tool has been designed to be as simple as possible to use and as such you should be able to start monitoring and managing an application with Isis in a matter of minutes. For a step by step guide to using the Isis tool, just following the 10 simple steps below.

Step 1 - Start The Isis Console

The Isis Console can be started by clicking on the Isis icon on your desktop or by selecting Isis from the start menu. If you are running Isis as a Windows Service then there may be a slight delay as the console resumes control from the windows service. For more information on starting Isis, please see the Starting Isis section of the help.

Step 2 - Create A New Application

Isis monitors 'applications' in the console, as such you will need to create a new application so that Isis can monitor it. To create new application, click on the create button on the Isis tool bar or select New Application from the File menu. You will now need to provide information on the application including where you would like Isis to store any information which is gathered from the application. For more information on creating new applications please see the Creating A New Application section of the help.

Step 3 - Provide Connection Information For Your Application

Before Isis can connect to an application it needs to know which machine the application is running on and any username or password information etc. Once an application is created in step two, you will be prompted to provide connection information for you application, select yes and provide all the necessary information. For more information on providing connection information for an application please see the Providing Connection Information section of this document.

Step 4 - Select Sources That You Wish To Monitor

Isis uses the concept of sources to understand what you require it to monitor. Once you application is connected you should now select the sources that you with to monitor so that Isis can start tracking this information for you. You can select sources by clicking on the Objects / Servers / Sources icon (the name of the icon will change depending on the application type that you currently have active) on the Isis tool bar and then selecting sources from the tree. For information on selecting sources, please see the Viewing Objects Or Servers section of this document.

Step 5 - Set A Monitoring Period And Enable Monitoring

Once you have selected one or more sources to be monitored you will need to enable the monitoring for the application and set the monitoring period. The monitoring period can be set on the main Isis screen for you application, set the interval that you wish to monitor at and then tick the enable monitoring box to enable the Isis monitoring. For more information on monitoring applications please see the Monitoring An Application section of this document.

Step 6 - Monitor The Application

Once the Perform Monitoring check box has been ticked as described in Step 5, Isis will begin monitoring the application. You can tell that Isis is monitoring because the status information and log windows will be constantly updated and after the first monitoring interval the screen will show the results of the information that has been gathered, you can now look at any of the recorded values and keep an eye on them as the system monitors the results.

Step 7 - Report On The Application

Once data has been recorded for an application you can then report on the data by pressing the report button off the toolbar. The report dialog screen will then appear and you can select the report that you wish to generate along with the date ranges and sources. For more information on reporting please see the section on Generating A Report in the Using The Isis Console documentation or the Isis Reports documentation, which outlines each report and what it can provide.

Step 8 - Create Rules And Actions

Click on the Monitoring And Rules panel of the menu on the left to expose the Create New IBP Rule and Rules Dashboard icons. The Create New IBP icon allows you to create new Industry Best Practice (IBP) rules, which can be used to monitor your application. Click the Create New IBP Rule icon now and you can start to create rules and actions to monitor your application. For more information on creating rules, please see the Configuring Rules And Actions section of this help documentation.

Step 9 - Monitor The Rules And Actions

Clicking the rules dashboard icon off the Monitoring And Rules panel of the menu allows you to see the current state of the rules in the system and what rules are currently firing or have fired. In addition you can configure if you want to the console to play a sound when a rule is fired, send emails or log the messages. For more information on monitoring the rules see the Configuring Rules And Actions section of this help documentation.

Step 10 - Set Your Preferences

By selecting the Preferences menu option off the File menu you are able to select preferences for your application. For example you might choose to have the application automatically connect when Isis is started, this is a good option to select, particularly if you are running Isis as a Windows Service as the Isis application needs to know to automatically connect when it starts.

That's all you really need to know in order to start using Isis, if you have any further questions please see the documentation of contact Isis Support.
